Senior player Cesar Azpilicueta has spoken highly of Chelsea youngster Reece James – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have hailed him for his comments.
The Blues pair are set to be competing for the right-back position this season at Stamford Bridge.
Club captain Azpilicueta has started the campaign at full-back, but the 29-year-old can struggle with the offensive side of his game and there are demands from manager Frank Lampard for his wide players to push forward.
James has been sidelined through injury at the beginning of the season, but is expected back after the first international break.
The 19-year-old is a highly-rated right-back to come out of the academy and he performed excellently last season in the Championship with Wigan Athletic.
He is yet to play a senior game for Chelsea, but he’s seen as a long-term option in defence and fans are excited to see him in action.
Azpilicueta is confident that James is going to make a major impact at Stamford Bridge and is tipping him for success.
“I am here to help everybody and he (James) is an amazing kid. He has a very good mentality,” Azpilicueta told the Evening Standard.
“No one has any doubts about his talent on the pitch and hopefully he can be a very important player.
“When he (first) came (to train with the senior side) he was already used to the way we play. After he arrived, I was playing as a centre-back so he was training on the right next to me.
“It was easy for me to get close to him and help him with the movements and to get used to the way we play. The movements that the manager asks us to play.”
A selection of Blues supporters feels Azpilicueta’s comments underline why he is captain with his selfless approach.
His game-time at right-back could be restricted if James does make a senior breakthrough, but he is keen to help the developing talent and loves success from the academy.

“Dave” is first-rate and I’ll always back him. You’ll rarely see Azpi complain and mostly has encouraging words for both fans and the club. Love the man.

Love this from Azpi. This is the attitude of a player who appreciates and values the club over their personal status. Great players who preserve the legacy of their team will be remembered far more than those who grasp onto their personal records of seasons past.

Fair play to azpilicueta for saying that. A true team player. True fans must respect that.

I trust Azpi to not make a fuss about James possibly taking his spot. Great knowing he’ll put the club first.
