Chelsea’s Under-18s side thrashed Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Youth Cup on Monday night – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter were left praising Ian Maatsen for his performance.

The young Blues outfit recorded an emphatic 7-0 win to move into the quarter-finals of the cup competition.

Maatsen smashed in the opening goal with his favoured left foot, while teammates Marcel Lewis (four), Tino Anjorin, Myles Peart-Harris and Xavier Simons were also on the scoresheet.

Maatsen proved his offensive qualities with his strike against Wolves and has been impressing this season at youth level.

The 17-year-old Dutchman moved to Stamford Bridge in 2018 from PSV Eindhoven and many believe he could be a future first teamer.

He is an attack-minded left-back that has made one senior appearance, which came earlier in the season during a Carabao Cup clash against Grimsby Town in September.

The Daily Mail has previously reported in February that Maatsen is close to signing a new contract with Chelsea and that it could be finalised next month.

A selection of Blues supporters on social media were extremely impressed by the teenager’s display in the cup and some have suggested that senior boss Frank Lampard should consider more minutes in the first team.

Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are the two recognised left-backs in the squad, but both are unreliable and versatile captain Cesar Azpilicueta has filled into the role recently.
