Bayern Munich will consider three emerging stars in their Champions League squad against Chelsea, as they prepare for the tournament’s new format.
Having already won the domestic double; Bundesliga and DFB Pokal, this season, Bayern are now fully focused on the European most elite competition as they aim for a third trophy this season.
They still have to host Chelsea at Allianz Arena for the rescheduled second leg of the Round of 16, but it’s fair to say Bayern should already prepare for the next stages.
They have a win and three away goals advantage from the first leg at Stamford Bridge back in February and are the favourites to qualify to the quarterfinal.
And due to the pause, this season’s Champions League quarterfinalist will play single-leg ties in Portugal all the way to the final on August 23.
Should Chelsea qualify, somehow, Frank Lampard would probably take a similar measure considering the busy schedule.
Speaking about the new additions to his new squad, Bayern boss Hansi Flick told Bundesliga’s official website: “In addition to those who were already [in the Champions League squad], Malik Tillman and Bright Arrey-Mbi will be included.
“If we reach the final tournament in Lisbon, then they will be coming with us too.
“You’ve also got to add Chris Richards to that. It was important that he spent a bit of time with his family, but when he comes back in the next few days, he will have to undergo a few tests and then he’ll join the team.”
Richards who plays as centre-back and right-back could feature against Chelsea since Bayern will be without their main right-back Benjamin Pavard due to a ligament injury.
They also have Joshua Kimmich, but the Germany international has mostly played in midfield this season.
