Olivier Giroud started in the defeat to Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night – and some Chelsea fans on Twitter were impressed by his contribution in the contest.
Chelsea suffered a 3-0 home defeat in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, which makes their trip to Germany for the second leg extremely tough.
Serge Gnabry (two) and Robert Lewandowski were on the scoresheet in the second-half for a powerful Bayern side that proved too much on the night.
The Blues did threaten the opposition’s goal on a few occasions, but couldn’t quite find the last touch and a three-goal margin is a gigantic ask to turnaround in the reverse fixture.
Frank Lampard stuck with the same XI that beat Tottenham in the Premier League at the weekend, which meant Giroud continued his mini renaissance.
The 33-year-old has spent most of the season frozen out as the third-choice striker at the club, but started back-to-back games for the first time this campaign.
It was only the 10th appearance of the season for the Frenchman across all competitions and he’s arguably lacking a little bit of match fitness.
But the centre-forward gave a good account of himself once again before he was substituted off for Tammy Abraham just after the hour mark against Bayern.
Giroud was getting the better of his fascinating one-on-one battle with defender Jerome Boateng and he was bringing his teammates into play further up the field in difficult circumstances.
A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media liked what they saw from their frontman and believe he did a great ob in attack.
Here are some Blues fans on Giroud’s display:
