Chelsea manager Frank Lampard found it difficult to hide his excitement when talking about his sides Champions League draw. The Blues will face Bayern Munich in a replay of the final in 2012, one which Lampard was, of course, part of as a player.
The game will no doubt bring back some incredible memories for Lampard and Chelsea fans alike. However, it is important not to get caught up in the emotion the tie brings. It will be the biggest test this young Chelsea side has faced, but Lampard is relishing the challenge.
Speaking to the club website after the draw, the Chelsea boss said: ”It’s a tough draw, but a good draw. We knew that when we get through the group stages, you’re generally in with some big teams and we have certainly drawn one.
”We have history with them, of course, but these will be games in themselves that will be very testing. We will be ready for the challenge.”
Bayern breezed through their Champions League group, not dropping a single point along the way. In games against Olympiacos, Tottenham Hotspur, and Crvena Zvezda, the Bavarians scored 24 goals and conceded just five.
Chelsea certainly had a tougher time in the first stage of the competition. The Blues only secured their place in the last-16 on the final game week, beating Lille 2-1. The two legs of this tie will no doubt be enthralling encounters, which really could go either way.
