'Very dependent': Nevin agrees with Rudiger about Real Madrid's biggest threat to Chelsea
Pat Nevin made it very clear about the trouble that Karim Benzema could cause Chelsea when they take on Real Madrid tonight, writing for the club website.
Benzema enters into this Champions League semi-final clash with the Blues in some of the best form of his glittering career.
Madrid’s French forward has managed 27 goals in 39 appearances this season, with nine in his past eight La Liga outings.
He is undoubtedly Zinedine Zidane’s leading man in attack and should pose Chelsea with the most questions.
Nevin gave a word of warning to his beloved Blues about Benzema’s credentials heading into this fixture.
“Vinicius Junior has been in improving form, Casemiro has been controlling midfield battles for months and Karim Benzema is once more a goal machine”, said the former Chelsea winger.
“Even though Real Madrid do share the goals around a bit, they are still very dependent on the Frenchman in the biggest games.”
It will be down to the players on the pitch to try and contain Benzema’s contributions.
One of those tasked with such a difficult responsibility is probably going to be Antonio Rudiger.
Chelsea’s German defender rarely hides from a battle and will cherish the chance to face such an elite attacker.
“He is one of the best strikers in the world,” Rudiger told Marca about potentially coming up against Benzema.
“A player who has been at Madrid for more than 10 years and who has achieved everything. A top player.
“But I’m not the only one up against him, we’re a team.”
Rudiger has already man handled one of the games greatest no.9s in a previous round of this competition.
Athletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez struggled to stamp his authority across the two-legged tie with Chelsea last month.
This can largely be owed to Rudiger’s constant harassment of the Uruguayan international.
Similar attention to detail will surely be required if the Blues are to keep Benzema under lock and key.
