Pat Nevin believes that Hakim Ziyech has the ability to eventually become the Chelsea player that could solve any creative issues within Thomas Tuchel’s team, speaking on Off The Ball.

This oath was promised to Blues fans when Ziyech signed joined from Ajax last year for £33.3m (Sky Sports).

They had every right to trust that the mercurial Moroccan had all the footballing imagination at his fingertips.

In the three seasons prior to his transfer to Stamford Bridge, Ziyech incredibly accumulated 102 assists for Ajax in all competitions.

He has only managed four in what’s been an underwhelming period at Chelsea.

Nevertheless, Nevin thinks the 27-year-old’s magic touch will soon return, from which the Blues will benefit from.

“I would say Chelsea’s problems are more the creative guy, the guy who can pick a lock,” admitted the former Chelsea winger.

“Manchester City’s got those guys. (Mohammed) Salah’s going to do that for you. Harry Kane’s grown into that. All the top teams have that player.

“Ziyech is the one, but he’s absolutely nowhere near playing well enough or been fit enough for long enough.

“Ziyech is the one, 100%. He’s not done it in the Premier League for a variety of reasons.

“It will probably be next season before we find out if he’s good enough to do that.”

It is fair to say that Chelsea is missing that ingenious individual in the final third.

Their two top creators in 2020/21 have been Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham.

On paper, they are meant to be scoring, not providing.

Chelsea’s issues at unpicking oppositions defences have become more evident during Tuchel’s reign.

Although the German has managed to tighten up his own fortress, breaking down someone else’s draw bridge has proved more difficult.

With the array of attacking talent at Tuchel’s disposal, this problem shouldn’t take too long to be resolved.

The Chelsea Chronicle View

Nevin always speaks to wisely and I once again found myself nodding at his Ziyech statement.

Agreed, it hasn’t worked out for him yet at Chelsea. Injuries and a changing of managers probably haven’t helped.

He needs to start asserting himself in games more, but that will come if he’s playing regularly and building confidence.
