Alan Shearer has explained he thinks Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel made an “inspired” decision at the weekend during his side’s win against Southampton.

The Blues currently sit top of the Premier League table during the internatonal break because of a 3-1 victory at home to Southampton on Saturday.

Tuchel’s side were heading for a point at Stamford Bridge, but James Ward Prowse’s red card in the 77th minute handed the initiative to the hosts.

Timo Werner, along with Ben Chilwell, got on the scoresheet inside the final 10 minutes to wrap up the win.

Intriguingly, Tuchel decided to bring on forgotten man Ross Barkley. The 27-year-old midfielder has barely featured all season. However, he made an instant impact off the bench by spraying a beautiful pass to pre-assist the goal that made it 2-1 at the time.

Shearer has praised the in-game decision from Chelsea’s boss, who he considers to be one of the best managers around.

“His decision to introduce Ross Barkley was inspired, as the 27-year-old played a big role in Chelsea’s second goal, which turned the match. That’s why the German is one of the best,” Shearer said.

Chelsea fans should have full faith in Tuchel

Of course, there has been some disgruntled Chelsea fans after recent defeats to both Juventus and Manchester City. But, they are both tough opponents who were just better on the day.

Despite a small bump in the road, the Blues sit top of the Premier League table after the opening seven rounds of fixtures.

It seems like the momentum under Tuchel rolls on, something which has been in full flow since he took charge in west London in January.

The German is clearly quite methodical with his ideas on the pitch, but surely he goes with his gut at times, too.

Can Ross Barkley made unlikely revival?

Barkley’s Chelsea career seemed over a month ago, especially after he failed to make a big impression during his loan at Aston Villa last season.

The Englishman should feel a sense of optimism, though, after his cameo display. One magical pass has got everyone discussing him again, which is exactly what he needs.

Tuchel even praised Barkley in his post-match press conference.
