Antonio Rudiger says “very smart’ Chelsea star is mentally strong

Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger has claimed that teammate Jorginho is someone who’s mentally strong.

Jorginho is one of the most experienced players in the Blues squad, along with centre-back Rudiger, and is preparing for this weekend’s Champions League final against Manchester City.

Aged 29, Jorginho is a central midfielder who’s a specialist in the squad in possession and arguably the player most comfortable with the ball at his feet.

The deep-lying playmaker isn’t guaranteed to start against Man City due to to the midfield competition, but he’s someone who’s played regularly during Thomas Tuchel’s reign so far at Stamford Bridge.

Rudiger has praised the £110,000-a-week Chelsea star ahead of the weekend.

“For me, he (Jorginho) is a player that is so [mentally] strong. Also, the way he’s playing is very smart,” Rudiger said.

“Very smart player. He knows when to turn. He knows when someone is behind his back. His awareness is good.”

Antonio Rudiger is spot on about mental toughness of Jorginho

If you consider some of the stick Jorginho has received since he joined Chelsea back in 2018, he’s got to be mentally tough.

The Italian divides opinion due to the fact he lacks pace, plus he’s prone to the odd lapse in concentration. Overall, he’s a top player that so many clubs in the world would love to have.

A combination of Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante may be the best way to set up against Man City with a bit more energy, but having possession-based midfielder Jorginho as an option for Chelsea is crucial.
