Burley sends stern message to Christian Pulisic over lack of game time at Chelsea

Craig Burley said Christian Pulisic must accept that he will not get any guarantees over starting role at any top club amid rumours over his potential Chelsea exit.

It has been over a month since Thomas Tuchel arrived at Chelsea, and Pulisic has yet to start in any Premier League match in that period.

According to Fabrizio Romano (via Here We Go Podcast), the 22-year-old is considering leaving the club this summer if he continues struggling to get minutes on the pitch.

This led to Tuchel’s being questioned about the rumours during his press conference on Friday, in which he had to clarify the American is in his plans.

Burley believes Pulisic’s lack of game time is purely down to competition.

“He [Pulisic] is a talented player, there is no doubt about that,” the former Chelsea midfielder told ESPN FC.

“But Tuchel sees him as a player who can affect the game from the bench.

“[Tuchel] prefers Hudson-Odoi at wing-back — when none of these [attackers] are wing-back.

“You then look at where else could Pulisic play. It would have to be one of those two positions behind the striker.”

Burley says Tuchel does not owe anyone an explanation

At the end of the day, Chelsea have been on an 11-game unbeaten run and in a good position in the top four race since the manager arrived.

“And as [Tuchel] said himself in the interview, welcome to the real world of a big club in London,” he continued.

“I’m sure he’s had that conversation with the young man himself, whether he accepts it, I don’t know.”

Reported interest from other top clubs

Another report from The Sun mentioned Manchester United among the clubs who are monitoring Pulisic’s Chelsea situation.

Some people believe Pulisic will have to leave Chelsea for another top club in order to play regularly — but Burley clearly does not think that would be the case.

“The perception that Pulisic is going to walk into some of these big clubs because [he has] a talent and you think [he is] going to play every week…” Burley added while shaking his head.

“You have to accept that as a player that when you get your chance, you have to take it, fight for it.

“But you’re not guaranteed to be playing in these top teams, particularly in England.”
