Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson has given a glowing verdict on Chelsea-owned Ross Barkley, as well as admitting he’s stunned he was sent out on loan to Aston Villa this season.
Barkley, 27, joined Premier League club Villa on a season-long loan in search of regular minutes.
The attacking midfielder has scored three goals in 14 appearances this campaign across all competitions, but did miss over a month around the festive period with a hamstring problem.
28-year-old striker Wilson, who cost Newcastle £20million (BBC), claimed he would have loved to see Barkley join him at St James’ Park this season on loan.
The duo have previously trained together with England.
“I was surprised [Chelsea let him go]. What I would say is that he’s at Villa now, but training with him he’s unreal!” Wilson told the Super 6 Podcast.
“For me as a striker he’d be a great person to play with, he’d help me score goals.
“I didn’t realise he would’ve gone on loan from Chelsea otherwise I’d have said to the manager you’ve got to bring him up here, he’s unbelievable!”

Barkley would have been an excellent signing for most teams in the Premier League last summer, especially a Newcastle side that are now being dragged into a relegation battle.
The creative playmaker has at times during his loan spell at Villa Park looked superb, but his injury setback has derailed his form a little and it’s something that has happened a number of times in his career.
He’s got the talent, but doing it consistently is another thing altogether.
It’ll be interesting to see if new Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, has a close eye on any of the players out on loan and whether he could bring any into the first-team fold at Stamford Bridge next season.
