Chelsea’s fourth defeat in their last five has led to further questions being asked of Lampard’s young side. Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta discussed their recent problems following the 1-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Blues have been struggling to break down teams in recent weeks. Goals have dried up for the likes of Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic, and Chelsea’s form has dipped because of it.
On top of this, the Blues have now conceded 25 goals in the Premier League. There are issues at both ends of the pitch for Lampard’s side. The manager, the team, and Chelsea fans will be desperate to get back on track next weekend in what is now a crucial game against London rivals Tottenham.
As reported by the club website, Azpilicueta openly discussed his side’s recent issues after the defeat: ”We didn’t find a way to break down their defence. In moments we didn’t move the ball quick enough, we didn’t take the chances that we did have.
”We have to be more effective. That is the problem we have had in a few games, in either box we were not good enough attacking and defending.”
The Spanish defender made sure to comment on the importance of next Sunday’s game against Tottenham. Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs adds another level to the rivalry this game brings and taking all three points could be a turning point for this Chelsea side.
Azpilicueta added: ”We have to make sure we are ready because there is a big game coming up, a derby against Tottenham next Sunday and we have to be ready for it. Now is time to think, to see what we didn’t do well, and go with everything on Sunday because we need the points.”
