Chelsea fans delighted with goalkeeper update from Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel confirmed last night that £22million (Sky Sports) man Edouard Mendy remains the number one goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge – and some of the Chelsea fans on Twitter admire the way the manager has dealt with the situation.

The Blues moved into the top four of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday night.

It was a fairly routine victory, but one huge talking point from the game was the team selection.

After impressing previously in the Carabao Cup, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga retained his spot in the XI for the league encounter.

The 26-year-old has had a rough time in a Chelsea shirt and he’s made several high-profile errors, but a change of manager has given him a new lease of life.

There was some confusion about the decision, but Tuchel clarified in his post-match comments that 28-year-old Mendy remains the first-choice goalkeeper despite Kepa’s inclusion against Newcastle.

“[Mendy] is the number one and this is clear,” Tuchel said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“It was clear before the game and it stays like this. I’m very happy that Kepa continued with a second clean sheet in a row.

“It was the moment to let him feel the rhythm and build up his confidence, not only in the cup game but also in a home game at Stamford Bridge. It was clear before that we hoped for the very best performance and a clean sheet.

“Edou will be in goal from now on because he recovered physically and mentally. Right now, today he’s the number one.”

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media have been left impressed by the total transparency from the manager.

German manager Tuchel is now winning over supporters, something which was naturally going to take time following the departure of club icon Frank Lampard.

Tuchel, who is new to English football, can be delighted with a six-game unbeaten run to start his Blues career, but there are much sterner tests to come.

There will be relief from all parties that he’s clarified the goalkeeper position and Mendy right now is rightfully the main man in-between the sticks.
