Chelsea conceded in the closing stages against Southampton to draw 3-3 in their Premier League game and it was another realisation that the team is still a working project.

Frank Lampard’s side will feel like it’s another two points dropped after Jannik Vestergaard scored a 92nd minute equaliser for the visitors at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues led 2-1 at half-time courtesy of Timo Werner’s first two league goals for the club, before Danny Ings equalised near the end of the first-half.

Southampton were allowed back into the contest when Che Adams equalised to make it 2-2 after a terrible mix up in defence and the absence of Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva in defence today was quite telling.

Kai Havertz restored Chelsea’s lead shortly after by finishing off a well worked move, but the vulnerability in defence once again proved costly and it was not the return to league action that Lampard will have wanted after the international break.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media did at least pick out attacker Werner as one major positive, as he announced his arrival properly on the Premier League stage and proved the kind of quality he possesses.

The 24-year-old German forward started in a more central role against the Saints and his opening goal was a brilliant individual finish that he scored after evading sliding defenders in the box, while his second was even more impressive as he lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and headed into the net.
