Mason Mount started in England’s emphatic 7-0 victory at home to Montenegro – but some Chelsea fans on Twitter were highly critical of his performance.

The Blues midfielder started for Gareth Southgate’s team at Wembley, as their victory secured a spot at next summer’s European Championships.

Mount started in a midfield trio alongside Harry Winks and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, where he was given a real licence to push forward against weak opposition.

The 20-year-old was unable to get a first senior England goal and saw one chalked off for offside, which pretty much summed up his performance.

He wasn’t at his sharpest before being substituted off in the second-half, but it must be noted they were dominating the game and it was pretty much over as a contest after the opening 20 minutes.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media were ripping into Mount after his international display.

The attacking midfielder was certainly not at his best and outshone by his teammates on the pitch, but the criticism fired towards him seemed completely over the top.

It seems like everyone forgets he’s aged just 20 and only made the step up to the top-flight in recent months.

He is already a regular starter in Frank Lampard’s XI with four goals and two assists so far this season, while his intelligent movement and energy off the ball is top-class.

Chelsea supporters should be totally behind the academy graduate to succeed and must be aware that the wave of youngsters coming through will have difficult patches.
