Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu earned Premier League minutes on Monday evening for Sheffield United – and some Blues fans on Twitter raved about his performance on Twitter.
The 20-year-old exited Stamford Bridge in the summer on a season-long loan and has moved to Bramall Lane to try gain regular first-team experience.
Despite starting on the bench for Sheffield United in their Monday fixture against Aston Villa, he was substituted on after just half an hour following John Egan’s red card.
The Wales international slotted into the back three, but the 10 men of Sheffield United were narrowly beaten 1-0 away to Villa.
Ampadu is a versatile player that has often been used in midfield for his national team, but is a defender by trade and it looks like he’s competing for a centre-back position at Sheffield United.
The youngster will be looking to make the most of Egan’s upcoming suspension and it’s an opportunity for him to try stake a claim to be in the regular league XI, something he may have done with his steady contribution against Villa.
He was temporarily let go from Frank Lampard’s squad this season, but many are convinced his long-term future will be in the Blues first-team and he’s had a brief taste of that with 12 senior Chelsea games in the past.
A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media overlooked their loanee’s latest performance and were impressed by his authority in a Premier League game.
Here are some Chelsea fans discussing Ampadu:
I hope Sheffield have realized that Ampadu is about to be their best CB cause rn they’re doing everything possible to let Villa win
