Chelsea were beaten at Goodison Park by Everton on Saturday night in a disappointing result – but some of the club’s fans on Twitter did at least find one positive from the performance of defender Reece James.

The Blues saw their unbeaten run come to an end with a 1-0 defeat away to Everton in the Premier League, as they missed out on the opportunity to move top of the table.

After a mistimed challenge from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Gylfi Sigurdsson converted the resulting penalty for the Merseyside club and gave them the three points.

Frank Lampard’s side went close to scoring on a couple of occasions by striking the woodwork twice, but overall it was one of the poorest displays of the season from the team.

With Callum Hudson-Odoi, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech all sidelined through injury, there was a real lack of creativity coming from the wide areas and Everton were resilient with crosses into the penalty area.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media did name James as one positive from the Everton result.

The 21-year-old right-back was resilient in his defensive work against Richarlison, while going forward he saw one effort hit the post and another well saved by England teammate Jordan Pickford in goal.

There were a number of Chelsea stars that dipped well below their usual level, but powerhouse full-back James was excellent for the visitors and there is a good shout for him being the player of the season so far.
