Chelsea teenager Ian Maatsen has signed a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter are extremely delighted with the news.

The Blues confirmed on their official website that the 18-year-old has penned a new deal to extend his stay in West London.

Maatsen has agreed a fresh deal that runs until at least summer 2024 and he’s quickly become an important player at youth level for Chelsea.

The rapid left-back joined from PSV Eindhoven back in July 2018 and in that time has established himself as a regular in the development squad teams.

He was rewarded earlier in the season by senior manager Frank Lampard, as he handed the youngster a first-team debut off the bench in the Carabao Cup victory over Grimsby Town.

The Dutch full-back has continued his improvement with the club’s Under-23s team this campaign and watched several teammates get opportunities in the first-team fold, which must be encouraging for the entire academy.

Billy Gilmour has really burst onto the main scene in the past week with displays against Liverpool and Everton, so there is definitely real talent lurking in the academy.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media are convinced that Maatsen is star in the making and are tipping him to be a senior regular in the future.
