Chelsea youngster Mason Mount starred during England’s 4-0 win against Iceland on Wednesday night – and some Blues fans on Twitter were left raving about his international display.
Gareth Southgate’s England side beat Iceland 4-0 at Wembley in the Nations League to make it a decent ending to the international break.
Mount, 21, started his fifth consecutive England game to highlight his importance for the national team and he played just over an hour before he was substituted off.
The central midfielder scored his nation’s second goal, which came about when he shifted the ball onto his left foot in the penalty box and tucked in a low finish.
Despite playing in a more advanced role in the weekend’s defeat to Belgium, the Blues playmaker dropped into a deeper position as a more conventional central midfielder and it gave him the chance to make runs forward from deep.
He saw a lot more of the ball with space in front of him and looked one of the biggest creative threats on the pitch.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has huge competition for places in his current squad, but Mount continues to be an important part of his plans and he should take confidence from his England performances.
It looked like Lampard was preferring him in a number eight midfield position prior to the international break and it’ll be intriguing to see what formation he picks away to Newcastle United this weekend.
A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media were impressed by Mount’s England display, giving him huge credit for his impact on the game:
