Chelsea recorded a 0-0 draw at home to Spanish club Sevilla on Tuesday night – and some of the Blues supporters on Twitter picked out substitute Mateo Kovacic as a bright spark from the European fixture.

Frank Lampard’s side started their Champions League group stage with a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge and travel to Russia next week to face Krasnodar, while Sevilla face French side Rennes.

Despite having a display of attacking talent on the pitch, the Blues were unable to find a clinical touch in front of goal and failed to create one standout goalscoring moment.

But they will be able to walk away from the fixture extremely pleased with a rare clean sheet, something that has been hard to come by for Lampard as the club’s manager.

A new-look backline worked extremely well together, plus there was real assurance from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy as well.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media felt that Kovacic deserved credit for his contribution off the bench.

Despite being named the club’s Player of the Year last season, the central midfielder has not been a nailed-on starter at the beginning of the new campaign and has tough competition for teammates Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.

Kovacic was introduced to the action in the 65th minute against Sevilla, which was plenty of time for him to have a positive impact on the match with some aggressive dribbles forward and some neat touches on the ball.

With a trip to Manchester United at the weekend in the Premier League, some are desperate to see the 26-year-old recalled to the XI.
