Chelsea travel to Southampton on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter want to see midfielder Mateo Kovacic recalled to the starting XI.

Frank Lampard’s side beat Brighton in their last league match, while also picking up victories in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town and Lille in the Champions League either side of that.

Kovacic has not started any of the last three games across all competitions and is having to be patient for his importunities at Stamford Bridge.

The central midfielder is battling for a spot in a competitive part of the team, which will only increase when Ruben Loftus-Cheek returns from injury.

But Kovacic has featured in every league game so far this campaign in some format and remains an important player at Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder that is such a good technician on the ball and a great dribble in possessions, but also has plenty of defensive steel.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media believe this weekend would be the ideal time to recall Kovacic to the side against Southampton.

He could easily slot into a midfield trio alongside N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, which is a combination that should dominate the game at St Mary’s.

But there is no guarantee that Lampard will turn to him, with Mason Mount and Ross Barkley two other players that come into the midfield equation.
