Chelsea host reigning Premier League champions Liverpool on Sunday – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have claimed in the build-up to that fixture that Olivier Giroud needs to be involved.

The Blues started the new league campaign with a 3-1 away win against Brighton, but now play defending champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard’s side lost both games against Liverpool last season by a 7-4 aggregate scoreline, but did manage to knock them out of the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-0 win.

Despite Liverpool being the runaway champions last year, pressure is being put on Chelsea to at least close that gap due to the club’s impressive transfer window so far.

Chelsea have sign Germany international Timo Werner to add some firepower in the final third and the striker had an impressive debut against Brighton despite failing to get on the scoresheet.

His arrival appears to have pushed both Giroud and Tammy Abraham down the pecking order, but manager Lampard now has plenty of different options and systems he can use.

Left-footed striker Giroud was an unused substitute against Brighton, but he offers a real physical presence when he leads the line and is an expert at linking up play with attackers around him.

The 33-year-old scored 10 goals in just 25 appearances across all competitions last season to prove his quality and is a real handful for any defender.

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media believe he should get the nod against Liverpool, with a couple suggesting he could test centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
