Ben Chilwell said he was really surprised by Chelsea teammate Reece James’ quality at such a young age and explained why the right-back is “difficult to play against”.
Among Chelsea players, James has arguably seen the most improvement since the start of the season.
Having played second fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta last time round, the 21-year has now really cemented his spot in the starting line-up.
So far this season, James has had nine Premier League starts (10 appearances overall).
Aside from his unbelievable crossing ability, one of James’ best qualities is arguably his physical attributes.
Chilwell even seemed to be impressed by how good his new teammate was upon his arrival this summer.
“I knew how good Reece was before I came here but I just wanted to say how much he’s surprised me,” Chilwell told the Guardian.
“He’s unbelievable, especially for [a] 20-year-old [James just turned 21 this week].
“He’s a brilliant player – powerful but quick with it.
“He’s very difficult to play against because of how physical he likes to be against his opponents.”
Chilwell also said he is enjoying the attacking freedom given by Frank Lampard.
“The fact he [Lampard] likes our full-backs to be high and wide suits me,” the England international added.
“I had to make sure defending was my priority. But the fact as full-backs we go forward was part of why I wanted to come.
“You’ve just got to make sure your deliveries are good and the strikers will do the rest.”
