Ben Chilwell praised Chelsea midfield duo Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho’s important roles in helping the team escape Porto’s relentless pressing game in the win over Porto on Wednesday.
Having scored a goal apiece to secure the first-leg win, Chilwell and Mason Mount understandably stole the limelight after the game.
Mount gave Chelsea the lead with their only shot in the first half, while the latter’s quick reaction and great composure produced the second goal out of nothing.
However, Chilwell also highlighted the importance of his two teammates who made it possible for Chelsea to get out of sticky situations during the game.
“I think the midfield was brilliant — Kova and Jorgi played brilliantly,” he told Chelsea TV in his post-match interview.
“You know, [they were] dictating the midfield.
“And when we came under spells when we were under pressure, they were brilliant at keeping the ball and gave us a bit of a breather.”
Their roles did not really go unnoticed, though, at least for Jorginho who was officially named man of the match.
While Chelsea were far from their best in the final third, their solid defence was as reliable as expected since Thomas Tuchel arrived, and controlling 61 percent of possession of the ball certainly played a big part.
