Ben Chilwell said centre-back pair Kurt Zouma and Thiago Silva played an important role in organising Chelsea’s defence in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.
The four goals Chelsea put past Crystal Palace was probably a bit harsh for the visitors who conceded two penalties after defending brilliantly in the first half.
Chelsea thoroughly deserved their first Premier League clean-sheet this season, though.
New goalkeeper Edouard Mendy did not have to face any shot on target despite Crystal Palace’s four attempts.
Chilwell marked his league debut in Chelsea blue with a goal and an assist highlighted how Zouma and Silva’s new partnership help organise the defence.
He told Chelsea’s official website: “We know it is very important and that is the biggest plus from the game.
“As a defender, I am going to say that but scoring four goals is great but a clean-sheet is perfect for us going into the international break, and hopefully we can continue to defend well like that.
“Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma were brilliant, solid, talking to everyone throughout the 90 minutes, and it is a good sign of things to come.”
There have been questions over potential communication issues at the back at Chelsea, but it certainly did not look so in Saturday’s game.
Lampard has played down the issue and pointed out that aside from Chilwell, the rest of his back five speak French.
“Edou [Mendy] speaks good English too, to be fair,” Lampard told the media after the game (via Football London).
“It is the position we are in with Kurt and Thiago straight in front of him that he can speak French, Azpi does as well.
“But, I think we will get there very quickly with that.”
