Chelsea player Ruben Loftus-Cheek has explained that he had issues regarding his fitness going into last season.
Loftus-Cheek, 25, spent the whole of the last campaign on loan with London rivals Fulham. It was unfortunate that he was part of a group that were relegated, but he’s now reunited with the Blues for pre-season.
The attacking midfielder has made an intriguing admission that going into the 2020/21 season he felt like had had lost muscle and power in his own game.
“I came back from injury and didn’t feel myself, didn’t feel powerful. I wasn’t running past people and I felt I’d lost a lot of muscle and power. So I felt I needed to get away, play as much as possible. I did that,” Loftus-Cheek said.
Loftus-Cheek missed the majority of the 2019/20 campaign with an Achilles injury, which was Frank Lampard’s first season in charge.
The 10-time capped England international was loaned out last year to Craven Cottage to get regular minutes. He played 32 games across all competitions, but the was unable to really stamp his authority.
Can Loftus-Cheek make Chelsea comeback?
If Loftus-Cheek breaks back into the fold at Chelsea, supporters will be overjoyed.
He’s a super talent to come through the Cobham academy and a role model to some of the younger Blues players.
Chelsea fans know what Loftus-Cheek can do when he’s on his A-game. He was a colossus as a box-to-box midfielder back under Maurizio Sarri.
However, he’s clearly still fighting the demons of a long-term injury.
He’s getting the chance under a new manager, Thomas Tuchel, this pre-season to impress.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed he is now back.
