Dietmar Hamann is predicting that Chelsea will finish no higher than third in the Premier League this season, claiming Liverpool are one of two teams currently better than them.
Chelsea sneaked into fourth during the last campaign in the Premier League, but winning the Champions League final more than made up for a challenging domestic year.
Thomas Tuchel’s Blues are now considered one of the title favourites for this season’s league crown. In fact, they are top of the division standings after the opening seven rounds of fixtures.
However, ex-Premier League footballer Hamann believes Liverpool are going to finish above Chelsea this season. In addition, he expects reigning league champions Manchester City to finish higher in the top flight.
“You can win the Champions League if you don’t have the best team. But the championship you can’t. That’s why third place would be the highest of feelings for Chelsea.”
How do Chelsea stack up to title rivals?
Chelsea’s challenging start to the season means they’ve already played a lot of their main competitors.
Tuchel’s men carved out an excellent 1-1 draw away to Liverpool at Anfield. But, they were beaten at Stamford Bridge at the end of September at home to Man City.
It’s obvious that Man City and Liverpool have been a cut above the rest in the last few years in England. Therefore, it’s going to take something special for someone to dethrone them.
Chelsea, along with Manchester United to an extent, look like genuine threats.
A defining factor for the Blues is that they’ve now got a proven centre-forward with the summer addition of Romelu Lukaku. Alan Shearer and Ian Wright both tipped the club for the league crown back in August.
Who is stronger – Liverpool or Chelsea?
For certain, Liverpool’s current group have achieved more than the current Chelsea crop. They can both brag about a European crown, but this current batch of Liverpool players have also won a Premier League together.
Tuchel’s Chelsea are still in the early process compared to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who have been elite for a few years.
It was intriguing though to see Chelsea get a well deserved point at Anfield earlier this season.
Some may just favour the Merseyside club when it comes to the best XIs, but the strength in depth surely has to lean towards Stamford Bridge.
