Fernando Torres expects Chelsea to be close in the Premier League title race this season, but isn’t sure if they will be able to keep pace with Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Blues started the new league season with a 3-1 away victory against Brighton on Monday night and expectation has risen around Stamford Bridge this summer, after being extremely active in the transfer window to sign some top-class players.
Timo Werner and Kai Havertz both made their debuts in the Brighton win, plus there is still Ben Chiwell, Thiago Silva and Hakim Ziyech to come into the first-team squad.
Ex-Blues striker Torres, who was part of the club’s famous Champions League triumph back in 2012, is impressed with the squad that’s taking shape under manager Frank Lampard.
He’s predicting that his former club may be in the mix for the title during the 2020/21 season, but does mention the firepower of Liverpool and Man City.
“I think they are building a fantastic team, not just for this season but for the future because they are building a very interesting squad but they are very young,” Torres told talkSPORT (11:18pm, 15 September).
“You can see that Frank can manage a young squad he did last season in a brilliant way. I’m sure they are going to be close [in the title race this season]. I don’t know if they are ready to compete against Liverpool or Man City, but they will be close.”
Despite the club’s impressive transfer window so far, it’s going to be a big ask to win the title this season and it may take some time for the young group to really gel together.
Liverpool were the runaway leaders in the Premier League last season as they steamrolled to the title and are going to take something stopping, while second-placed Manchester City are surely going to bounce back under manager Pep Guardiola.
