Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said Cesar Azpilicueta and Christian Pulisic’s injuries were big reasons why he didn’t use N’Golo Kante in the FA Cup final.
It all looked good for Chelsea in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the game.
The Blues controlled the game and managed to score an early goal as Pulisic found the net despite being surrounded by three Arsenal players inside the penalty box.
But the intensity went down which gave Arsenal the opportunity to regain control, and Lampard admitted that it was their own mistake.
He told Chelsea’s official website: “We started well, we allowed them back into the game, that was our fault on the pitch.
“We got comfortable, and we got slower on the ball after being sharp and bright.
The manager also took a swipe at some questionable decisions from the referee, saying: “And there were a lot of things in the game that went against us.
“Sometimes that happens and it affected the subs I could make, affected the team.
“That’s football, I suppose.”
Lampard then explained why he left Kante unused on the bench for such an important game.
“N’Golo wasn’t fit to start the game because of his injury, and I couldn’t bring him on because I only had one more substitution (window) and it was 20 minutes (left).
“If his injury kicked in again, then we would have been a man down after we already were a man down (Mateo Kovacic’s red card).
Azpilicueta and Pulisic’s injuries forced Lampard to use two out of three substitution windows he had, and understandably, he did not want to risk playing not fully fit Kante.
