Frank Leboeuf says Declan Rice would be great for Chelsea

Frank Leboeuf has suggested West Ham’s Declan Rice as somebody that Chelsea need in their midfield.

Rice, 21, is already established as one of the most important players at Premier League and London rivals West Ham, plus he’s made 10 senior international caps for England.

He is all-action central midfielder that is best at breaking up play in front of the back four and covering the defence, but he’s beginning to develop his game to become a better passer and creator, too.

The midfielder, who is best friends with Chelsea star Mason Mount, was previously at the Blues academy as a youngster before ending up at West Ham.

Eurosport reported in November that Frank Lampard’s side view Rice as a transfer target and that they would “love” to sign him, but a £70million price tag would need to be negotiated.

Leboeuf has named the West Ham talisman as somebody he’d like to see at Stamford Bridge, as he feels Chelsea need reinforcements in the centre of the park, but at the right price.

“I think they need somebody in the middle of the park. Rice the former Chelsea young player who left the academy is maybe one of the targets for Frank Lampard. I think he might be the right target, depending on the price,” Leboeuf told ESPN.

If Chelsea do spend big in the January window, it would be a surprise given the activity in the summer and traditionally pulling off huge signings mid-way through a season is difficult.

Rice is a talented midfielder that appears to be improving each game and he’s got the qualities to move to one of the elite clubs, but right now Chelsea have one of the very best in N’Golo Kante sitting in front of the defence.
