Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger thinks Liverpool deserve to be crowned the Premier League champions as he highlighted the danger of restarting the league.
The Dutch Eredivisie and French Ligue 1 have already decided to end their respective competitions prematurely amid uncertainties surrounding the global pandemic.
The former abandoned the title and relegation altogether, while Paris Saint-Germain have been given the Ligue 1 title.
The Premier League has previously declared their intention to complete the season, having postponed the league indefinitely.
But Chelsea’s Rudiger has suggested the Premier League copy their French counterparts and hand the league title to Liverpool.
Rudiger told ZDF: “Honestly, as far as I’m concerned they can give Liverpool the title.
“At the end of the day they deserve it, they’ve had a great season and are leading the table with, oh I don’t know how many points.
“The thing is they were going to win the thing anyway, so I think the title is theirs ethically. Of course, I hope that the season can be finished and it will be sporting for everyone.
“But, as I’ve said before if we continue to play and there is a danger, and we ignore that while people are dying somewhere in the world, I don’t know if that would sit right on my conscience.”
Who will win the title, however, is just one of the issues with scrapping the remainder of the campaign.
The likes of Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion, who are on the verge of promotion to the Premier League, would likely take the matter to the court as it could potentially cost them millions in revenue.
There would also be the problem of Champions League and Europa League spots with teams including Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderes, Sheffield United, and Tottenham Hotspur still fighting for the top four spots.
