Chelsea supporters were boosted by the update that Jose Gimenez would not be part of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League squad on Tuesday.

The Uruguayan was forced off with a muscle injury in his left thigh during Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Levante last weekend.

This has been a reoccurring problem for Gimenez, having already missed nine games this season thanks to the same kind of issues.

Madrid confirmed the central defender’s omission from their traveling pack that would be taking on Chelsea in Bucharest tomorrow night.

And Blues fans feel that Gimenez’s absence makes their task of winning easier.

Diego Simeone still possesses plenty of quality in his squad, particularly in attack through the likes of Luis Suarez, Joao Felix, and new signing Moussa Dembele.

But Gimenez will still be a significant miss for the La Liga leaders.

They’ve only lost two matches in 2021/20 with the 26-year-old in attendance. On both occasions, he didn’t complete 90 minutes.

His European exclusion for this specific tie will have added meaning because of his transfer links to Chelsea.

Last July, The Telegraph reported that Gimenez was being monitored by the Blues but was apparently put off by the £109m (Telegraph) price tag placed upon his head by Atletico.
