Willy Caballero said Chelsea deserve credit for their big decision to sign ‘unknown’ Edouard Mendy who has turned out to be brilliant since arriving in the summer.
So far this season, Mendy has kept second-most clean-sheets in the Premier League (14) and joint-most in the Champions League (six).
The 29-year-old has not had to make a lot of saves, thanks to the solid defensive line in front of him, but there were still moments when he had to bail the team out to secure points.
In his post-match interview after the Leeds United draw earlier this month, Ben Chilwell said the Chelsea players know they always rely on Mendy to make vital saves when it comes down to it.
Chelsea ‘were right’ to sign Mendy
Fellow Chelsea goalkeeper Caballero has now had his say about the Senegal international.
“Mendy was an unknown for the Premier League, but that’s what happens with goalkeepers who are in other leagues,” Caballero told 90min.
“Sometimes they are not appreciated because they put quotation marks around the leagues.
“You have to take your hat off to Chelsea because they were right to go for him and not for another big name in the transfer market.
“He is almost two-metre tall, very big, very fast, and with a lot of explosiveness.
“He is getting more confident and is playing better and better with his feet, because the football that Tuchel wants requires it.
“If the team moves up in the table, he will be one of the big players to watch out for.”
The two Chelsea figures that deserve most of the credit for Mendy signing are Christophe Lollichon and Petr Cech.
Cech even said that he and Lollichon had already been scouting Mendy for years before his arrival.
