‘I would not do this’: Tuchel names position he doesn’t think 24-year-old Chelsea man can play in
Thomas Tuchel has explained why he doesn’t think Ben Chilwell has the attributes needed to play in the back three at Chelsea.
Chilwell is in a rich vein of form right now where he’s scored four goals in his last four starts for club and country.
The 24-year-old Englishman is excelling in the left wing-back position at Stamford Bridge, albeit he’s got extremely strong competition for his starting role from teammate Marcos Alonso.
There is no doubt his game is improving going forward. He’s always been reliable since his transfer arrival from Leicester City last summer, too.
Tuchel has made an interesting claim that he wouldn’t look towards Chilwell as someone that can provide cover as a centre-back in a back three.
Chelsea teammate Reece James often switches between wing-back and centre-half, but Chilwell is regarded as a more naturally attacking player.
“For Reecey [James], you see sometimes he plays in the back line of three. I would not do this with Chilly. In terms of character, he’s not a guy who can play in the back three. He takes by character a little more risk, he feels a little more free to arrive in offensive positions,” Tuchel said.
Chilwell setting example for Chelsea squad
For Chilwell, he was a forgotten man at the start of the season that couldn’t get into the XI and was being starved of minutes.
However, his patience is the example the rest of the squad should follow.
The England full-back has played out of his skin since handed an opportunity by Tuchel and it doesn’t look like he’s giving up his starting position anytime soon. BBC pundit Garth Crooks recently claimed he looks like he’s in the form of his life.
Chilwell was superb during various points of his debut Chelsea season last year, but it’s exciting to think the best is still to come from him as he matures into his wing-back role. Tuchel is definitely simplifying everything for him to get the best out.
Blues defence a class act
Chelsea’s options in defence must be the envy of all teams in the division.
They are stacked with so much talent in the centre-back roles, including the likes of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta.
