'I'm surprised': Tuchel admits he's been shocked by 28-year-old Chelsea player's displays recently

Thomas Tuchel has admitted he’s been shocked by the recent displays from Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku after his time off.

The 28-year-old striker has scored in back-to-back Premier League games after netting a header in last night’s 1-1 draw at home to Brighton.

He completed 90 minutes on Wednesday following his return to the Blues XI, which soon after after 45 minutes against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

The left-footed striker is now forcing his way into Tuchel’s line-up and surely he retains his position on 2 January for the visit of Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in a league showdown.

It was a difficult evening yesterday as Brighton equalised through Danny Welbeck in stoppage time. However, Lukaku was a big positive for the home side during the contest with his constant battling in the final third. Some Chelsea fans on Twitter applauded last night’s performance.

Tuchel has confessed his recent surprised by the Belgium international:

“‘I’m surprised what he’s doing. I don’t know how long he can do it. We will try it and then we will see. Nobody knows,” Tuchel said.

“‘He was eight weeks out, and when he was trying to come back he caught Covid, and then after that training and then playing. That’s what we do at the moment.”

Chelsea need him Sunday

Of course, Tuchel’s playing a dangerous game where he’s trying to avoid burning out certain players and risking even more injuries to the squad.

However, Lukaku needs to start once again in just a few days time in a must-win game against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp is definitely going to put out the strongest Liverpool XI available to him, something Tuchel needs to match. A defeat for either and you feel it will be impossible for them to claw back the deficit to current runaway league leaders Manchester City.

Lukaku’s name in the line-up this weekend will give a major boost to supporters and the team. Also, Chelsea need to send out a message in their first game of 2022 and Lukaku is the in-form player to lead them.
