Is teenage wonderkid Ethan Ampadu to miss the rest of the season?

It has been confirmed by Chelsea that teenage wonderkid Ethan Ampadu is to miss the rest of the 2017/18 season with a fractured ankle.

The injury is a big blow to the youngster signed from Exeter City last summer. It was sustained in Chelsea’s 4-2 victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Youth League last week and led to Ampadu being withdrawn from the Wales squad to play in the China Cup.

No reason was given for his withdrawal at the time and it was considered that Ampadu would be better served staying at Cobham rather than an energy-sapping trip to the Far East.

Ampadu, equally comfortable in defence or midfield, is highly rated by Antonio Conte and could have expected to have gained more first-team minutes between now and the end of the season, particularly if the race for 4th place ends sooner than most Chelsea fans would like.

He has made seven appearances already this season, including four starts, and made his Wales debut in November last year.
