Paul Merson has admitted his worry over Chelsea forward Timo Werner is when it comes to his finishing, so is adamant the Blues need to bring in a new frontman during the transfer window.
Werner, who earns £170,000-a-week, did come in for plenty of criticism during his debut year at Stamford Bridge.
The German attacker was guilty of missing numerous clear goalscoring opportunities.
However, he was a Champions League winner during his first season at Chelsea. In addition, he scored 12 goals and made 15 assists in 52 appearances.
Pundit and Chelsea fan Merson is convinced the Blues need to sign a striker this summer, which is why he’s uncertain on what will happen with Werner.
“In my opinion, Chelsea need a forward. I don’t know what the deal is with Erling Haaland, but they need someone who can score 20 Premier League goals a season. Timo Werner is a different kind of player – he’s a willing runner who works hard for the team and is very unselfish. However, he doesn’t strike me as someone who can score 20 goals a season, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens there,” Merson said.
Werner can be a star for Chelsea
Chelsea fans were expecting a goal machine when they signed Werner, which is understandable after 95 goals in 159 appearances for RB Leipzig.
He did fall short of that expectation. However, 27 direct goal contributions during your first year in English football is no easy task.
The speedster definitely unsettles defences with his pace and movement in the final third.
If he can sharpen up his finishing, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel knows he’s got such a dangerous option in his squad.
A new striker should be signed if possible by the club, but that doesn’t mean Werner is out of the side.
