Jack Grealish insists Chelsea star Mason Mount is ‘underrated’
Jack Grealish has dismissed claims that he’s fighting alongside England teammate Mason Mount for the same position and claimed that the Chelsea star is underrated.
Aston Villa’s £125,000-a-week (Telegraph) attacker Grealish started on Thursday night during England’s 3-0 victory at Wembley against Republic of Ireland.
The 25-year-old started in the left-winger role for the Three Lions, while Blues star Mount played in a central midfield position linking up play and starting attacks.
Plenty have been demanding that Grealish becomes a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England XI and Mount has often been the one criticised for taking his spot.
But Villa captain Grealish has jumped to the defence of the Chelsea youngster, explaining they are competing for different roles and stating how highly he rates him.
“I love Mason, it’s a bit annoying actually because he probably gets a little bit of stick at times from it,” Grealish said, as quoted by Football Daily.
“I’ve always been close with Mason. I think he’s an absolutely terrific player and I don’t really think we are fighting for the same spot to be honest.
“I think if anything Mason is underrated, he deserves all the credit he gets and I think people who know about football will understand just how good he is.”
Thursday night is glaring evidence that Mount and Grealish can play in the same XI, which will hopefully bring an end to the criticism that is fired towards the Chelsea star.
Mount’s intelligence means he can play a number of different positions on the pitch, but he looked right at home in the centre of the park during England’s win over Ireland and it’s an area that Blues manager Frank Lampard is now starting to get the best out of him as well.
