Jermaine Jenas picks Chelsea midfield for Manchester City fixture
Jermaine Jenas has left £71million star (BBC) Kai Havertz out of his line-up when picking the best midfield Chelsea can name this weekend against Manchester City.
The Blues host Man City at 4:30pm on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, with both teams desperate for three points to try climb up the Premier League table.
Frank Lampard’s side go into the contest off the back of one point from the two previous league games, with a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal followed up by a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.
With Chelsea using a three-man midfield this season, it was a combination of N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic that started the Arsenal loss.
Lampard swapped Jorginho for Kovacic in the Villa fixture and it’ll be interesting to see who he selects against Man City, with Havertz and Billy Gilmour two others vying for a starting position.
Pundit Jenas has advised the Chelsea manager to select a trio of Kante, Kovacic and Mount this weekend.
“Going into this game against Manchester City, I believe his best midfield is Kante, Kovacic and Mason Mount. So, where does Havertz come into that then?” Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.
Despite a slow start to life as a Chelsea player, Havertz is a superb talent that can add a creative spark and a big performance against a top team is exactly the kind of thing he needs to kickstart his Blues career.
Both Kante and Kovacic are nailed-on starters in the XI, but who plays alongside them for now remains uncertain.
