Joe Cole gave a glowing verdict on Chelsea’s Mason Mount for his individual display on Saturday against Southampton.
The Blues came from behind to draw 1-1 away to Southampton, but they will feel disappointed not to win after having 71 per cent possession.
Takumi Minamino’s first-half goal for the Saints gave them the lead against the run of play, as the attacker raced through on goal and showed real composure to finish inside the box.
Mount, who has been the go-to man for much of this season so far, scored a second-half penalty to level the score after he was fouled in the box.
The 22-year-old attacker looked the most likely to grab a winner with some real creative moments, but there was a lack of penetration throughout the side.
Pundit and ex-Chelsea favourite Cole singled out Mount as somebody that was a bright spark against Southampton.
“He’s a great player. He’s a leader now in this dressing room,” Cole told BT Sport 1 (2:50pm, 20 February).
“I think he’ll got on to be a Chelsea captain. He was excellent today. Played in that 10 position. He’s got great feet.”
If Tuchel didn’t know already, then he was once again given a clear example this weekend as to why Mount is the most crucial player in the current Chelsea squad.
He can do a brilliant job whether that’s in midfield or further up the pitch, with the manager preferring him in a more advanced number 10 position.
Mount doesn’t look like a youngster within the Chelsea group now despite his age and tipping him to be a future club captain looks a good bet right now.
