Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is reportedly due for a medical ahead of a loan move to Italian giants AC Milan.
According to well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Bakayoko is set to complete a move to the San Siro on a two-year loan deal.
It is understood the Frenchman will pen a new contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2024 before leaving on loan. Also, Milan will have the option to buy him on a permanent basis for around £13million (€15million).
Bakayoko, who Chelsea signed from Monaco back in 2017, has had a tough spell at the Bridge where he’s failed to show any kind of form.
He’s spent the last few campaigns out on various loans, including the 2018/19 season at Milan, so he’ll be returning to familiar surroundings this year.
There could be an argument made to say Thomas Tuchel’s squad needs an extra central midfielder to challenge the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic for a starting position. However, Bakayoko looks miles away from the player he was at Monaco.
Chelsea could make £27m loss on Bakayko
In general, Chelsea’s transfer business in the last few years has been extremely positive. Bakayoko is one of few, though, that slots in the category of a failure.
The Blues should hope Milan decide to activate their option to buy the midfielder later down the line, albeit it will mean a sizeable loss on the £40million he cost.
He’s not had the physical attributes to cope with the pace of the Premier League, but the Italian game suits him better.
