Kurt Zouma has congratulated centre-back partner Antonio Rudiger on social media after Chelsea’s win over Newcastle United on Saturday.
With 71 per cent of possession in the contest, the Blues managed to leave St James’ Park with a 2-0 victory and it temporarily lifted them to top of the Premier League table.
Federico Fernandez netted an own goal at the back post to give Chelsea an early lead, while in-form striker Tammy Abraham doubled the advantage in the second-half.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard did have to make a change to a formidable defence that once again kept a clean sheet.
Thiago Silva wasn’t risked after only returning from international duty with Brazil late on Thursday, which is why Rudiger was given his first league minutes of the season.
Rudiger, 27, hasn’t been a regular in the Chelsea team this campaign and has had to bide his time, but has played regularly for national team Germany.
He came into the starting XI alongside ever-present Zouma in the heart of defence and the duo looked well disciplined to help keep a clean sheet, albeit they weren’t overly tested by Newcastle.
