Frank Lampard said Mason Mount is capable of scoring more goals from midfield for Chelsea after his brilliant opening goal against Morecambe on Sunday.
The England international drilled the ball into the bottom corner as he scored the opening goal for Chelsea– a perfect way to celebrate his 22nd birthday.
The goal helped boost the team confidence as they cruised to a 4-0 victory against the League Two side.
It was Mount’s only third goal in all competition this season which is low considering his previous goalscoring records.
Lampard believes the midfielder could increase his goal output despite playing a bit deeper as a No.8.
“Mason can, should, and will score more goals in midfield,” Lampard told Chelsea TV.
“Because of the amount of games he’s played already, we forget how young he is. It’s part of his development.
“The same sort of thing with Kai and Timo on a different level.
“Games like today are a good little confidence boost.”
This is certainly one area Chelsea and Mount in particular could improve.
According to Opta (via Whoscored), Chelsea have scored only three goals from outside the penalty area in the Premier League so far.
Interestingly, Chelsea have had third-most shots from outside the box in the league (86 — or 5.1 per game) with Mount having the most (23 — scoring just one).
But aside from Mount, Chelsea practically have no long-range threat.
The next Chelsea players with the most shots from outside the box are Reece James and Hakim Ziyech with 13 and 10 attempts, respectively.
Without goalscoring threats lurking from outside the box, a lot of opponents would be happy to sit deep and defend against threats from wide areas which is often the case for Chelsea.
