Michael Essien believes former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard is the right man for the manager’s job but has to deliver this season given the high expectations that come with the club’s summer spending spree.
Like the rest of the Premier League, Chelsea have had an inconsistent start to the season with two wins, three draws, and a loss from six games.
With just a four-point gap between Chelsea and table-toppers Everton, the race to the Premier League title remains wide open.
While some fans have questioned Lampard’s ability to lead Chelsea to the top after recent goalless draws, Essien believes his former midfield partner is the right man for the job.
He told Goal: “He [Lampard] is Chelsea. He knows the club inside out and what needs to be done.
“He will get the help of everyone there and I think so far he has done a good job.
“Last season was a good achievement and it isn’t an easy place to manage. The fans can demand a lot so it isn’t easy, and he is doing his best.
“They have added good players so they will have to deliver as a lot is expected now.”
Speaking about the young players at Chelsea, Essien joked: “The young players are doing well but I don’t know if they could play in my old team!
“I am joking because I like the young players, with the likes of Mason Mount.
“But you need to raise your game at Chelsea constantly.”
The former Ghana international also sent a message to another former Chelsea teammate, Petr Cech, who was recently named in Chelsea’s Premier League squad alongside his main role as technical and performance adviser.
“Pete is a very lovely guy and it is great to have him around and it will be great for the Chelsea goalkeepers,” Essien said.
“I am happy for him to be back at the club in a very important role. I think he is doing well so far and I wish him all the best.”
