Lampard should make three changes for crucial Arsenal clash
The game against Arsenal is another hugely important one for Frank Lampard and his Chelsea team. The 2-0 loss to Southampton has caused more questions to be asked, and failing to win against their London rivals could see them fall out of the top four.
After success using the 3-4-3 formation against Tottenham, Lampard opted to stick with it against Southampton. It did not work, so it will be interesting to see how the Blues set up for the game at the Emirates.
Here is how Chelsea should line-up against Arsenal to bounce back from the recent defeat.
Kepa – Rudiger – Zouma – Tomori
Expect the Chelsea boss to keep the faith in the back three in front of Kepa he chose at Southampton. Although they did not perform to their best on Boxing day, Rudiger, Zouma, and Tomori remain the club’s top center-backs.
They suit playing in a back three and showed signs of forming a good understanding if given time. They were excellent against Spurs and could show that again against Arsenal.
Azpilicueta – Kante – Kovacic – Alonso
Reece James remains sidelined with an ankle injury, so Azpilicueta will start at right-wing-back. Marcus Alonso could return to the side after a disappointing showing from Emerson on Boxing Day. The Spaniard is the more natural wing-back and was very effective against Tottenham.
The midfield two should be N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic. The Blues missed their Croatian midfield maestro against Southampton and he needs to come back into the starting team to give Chelsea the best chance of getting all three points.
Willian – Abraham – Pulisic
This is a difficult one. Willian and Tammy Abraham pick themselves, but the other spot is up for debate.
Callum Hudson-Odoi disappointed when given the chance against Southampton. Mason Mount played on the right side of the front three against Tottenham and Chelsea missed his intense press against Southampton.
However, some Blues fans want Christian Pulisic back in the starting line-up. The American has not started in either of the last two games and will be hungry going into the game against Arsenal.
