Mario Melchiot has praised Chelsea’s Mason Mount after his Champions League display in midweek.

The Blues are currently preparing for their trip to Crystal Palace this weekend in the Premier League, but most supporters will still be thinking about Wednesday’s superb result.

Thomas Tuchel’s side seized control of their Champions League quarter-final tie by beating Porto 2-0 in the away leg. It leaves the Premier League side as massive favourites to progress during next week’s second leg.

Melchiot believes that 22-year-old Chelsea star Mount was so intelligent on the European stage.

The English attacker scored the opening goal in style with a brilliant turn and finish in a smooth motion.

“I like Mason. What I like about Mason is his intelligence. Of course, he’s got great work rate, but he’s a very smart kid,” Melchiot told talkSPORT.

“To pick up the ball, Mason is very good at that. He knows exactly when he can turn and when he has to drop the ball short.”

It looks like Mount is going to be implemented as an attacking midfielder for England at this summer’s European Championships, which is a role he fits well.

But he’s extremely versatile, and Tuchel seems to be enjoying him in more advanced positions.

He’s certainly growing in confidence with his finishing, which is an area of his game that will allow him to reach dizzy heights if he keeps improving in that aspect.

It’s a brilliant mix between youth and experience in the Chelsea group, but Mount is one of the younger ones really setting the example for all to try follow on the pitch.
