Micah Richards has named Chelsea duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner as the flops of the year after a disappointing start to their Premier League careers.

Coming into the new league with big expectations following sensational seasons in Bundesliga was never going to be easy for both Werner and Havertz.

But while many Chelsea fans would like to avoid this conversation, the reality is that German pair has not been able to live up to initial expectations, at least not yet.

Even they have each spoken about it.

You can read it here: Havertz promises to turn around the disappointing Chelsea season; while Werner spoke about his goal drought.

Still, Richards’ bold claim would raise some eyebrows among Blues fans.

“Sadly, it’s a toss-up between two Chelsea players — Kai Havertz and Timo Werner,” the former England international told Daily Mail when asked to pick the Premier League flop of the year.

“I could not have been more complimentary about Werner when he signed last summer.

“I was expecting massive things from him, after watching him for RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

“It just hasn’t happened for him, but the same is also true of Havertz.

“I hope both of them learn from this difficult season and come back to show their true potential.”

Richards clearly judged both Havertz and Werner based on their massive transfer fees and the expectations around them when they first signed.

However, Chelsea brought in these two to be part of their long-term project, particularly Havertz who just turned 21 when he signed for the club.

Underwhelming, yes, but flops? Come on.
