'My understanding': Journalist claims Chelsea are in advanced talks with 45-year-old sporting director
Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks with Christoph Freund, who’s currently the sporting director of Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Blues are holding discussions with the 45-year-old about him potentially becoming sporting director at Stamford Bridge.
He adds that he’s viewed as a frontrunner ahead of Monaco’s Paul Mitchell, who wants the Chelsea position.
Jacobs wrote on Twitter: “My understanding on Chelsea’s new sporting director is talks with Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund are already pretty advanced. Todd Boehly is a big fan of the Red Bull model. He’s currently ahead of Monaco’s Paul Mitchell, who really wants the job, too.”
Chelsea talks with Christoph Freund
Freund, 45, is someone that’s been very successful at Salzburg when it comes to signing and recruiting talented players in recent times.
Therefore, it’s no surprise to hear the Blues are chasing him, especially when Chelsea’s co-owner Todd Boehly is an admirer of the Salzburg model.
Chelsea’s pursuit of a new sporting director is well known now, with a recent report claiming that Paris Saint-Germain’s football advisor, Luis Campos, is someone they’ve already spoken with.
This latest update is that the London club are at an advanced stage for Salzburg’s man Freund, though.
The new Chelsea ownership is going out piece by piece to restructure the club how they like, so they deserve credit for being clear with their ambition.
Thomas Tuchel’s sacking last week as Blues manager came as a shock to plenty of supporters, but faith has been put in Graham Potter as the new head coach to take this team forward.
For certain, the appointment of a next sporting director is something that should go hand in hand with Potter’s appointment.
