Former Blue Pat Nevin has shared his excitement about Chelsea’s potentially having a special attacking partnership between Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic.
The attacking duo made headlines for their brilliant performances in the 4-1 over Crystal Palace on Saturday; Havertz with a goal and an assist and Pulisic with a brace.
Chelsea had plenty of interesting partnerships all over the pitch in that game.
Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in midfield, academy graduate duo Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi on the right side of the pitch, just to name a few examples.
But it is the link-up between Havertz and Pulisic that excites Nevin the most, because of their potential.
“The partnerships are gelling all over the team, but if Havertz and Pulisic can build on this one, it could be very special indeed,” the former Chelsea winger told the club’s official website.
“Both have the ability to become world-class players individually, so just think what they can do as a duo.
“If both are ready to take the next step right now, then anything is possible over the next few seasons, and in the short term, tonight [v Porto] should be safe enough.”
Most Chelsea fans would certainly hope that they could see the pair play together again in the second-leg game against Porto, and hopefully continue their good form.
Thomas Tuchel, however, might decide against that, given Chelsea will also have a very important FA Cup semi-final match against Manchester City on Saturday.
Having had a two-goal lead over Porto from the first leg, it would make sense if the manager want to keep his most in-form players fully fit for the weekend, while giving some minutes to other attackers, such as Olivier Giroud and Hakim Ziyech, who have not played much lately.
