‘No question’: Werner makes strong claim about Lukaku as he prepares to join Chelsea
Timo Werner has strongly claimed that new imminent Chelsea signing Romelu Lukaku is in the top three strikers in the world.
Lukaku, who’s being tipped to join the Blues by countless media outlets, has proven in the last couple of years at Inter Milan he’s a superstar.
Chelsea favourite Didier Drogba says Lukaku’s move from Inter to Stamford Bridge is complete. However, there has been no official announcement as he prepares to return to England.
Lukaku, who spent three years as a Chelsea player earlier in his career, is now making a comeback to west London.
The left-footed centre-forward has been a goalscorer at Inter, Manchester United, Everton, Anderlecht at West Brom. All eyes will now be on to see if he can achieve big things under Thomas Tuchel.
25-year-old Werner has given high praise to his soon-to-be 28-year-old teammate Lukaku.
“He’s probably one of the best three strikers in the world at the moment, no question. I don’t think we need to say too much about him,” Werner said.
“He’s a world-class striker who would benefit any team. I certainly think at RB Leipzig it always helped me having a big striker alongside me.
“I think that’s always good because I’m not the biggest and when you play on you own up front you obviously always have the attention of one or two brawny defenders.
“It’s a good new weapon to have in our game when you know if you play a long ball he’ll hold it up and then the fast players around him can set off. I think that’s good for any team.”
Can Lukaku + Werner partnership work?
Short answer, yes.
Both attackers have enjoyed success in their careers playing as part of a two-man strike partnership, so perhaps they could form a bond at Stamford Bridge.
It’s unclear on how Tuchel will select his best XI in the new season, but he’s got so many options within his squad.
A Lukaku-Werner combination in a 3-5-2 system is something that could be worth trying. It could be a great way to get the best out of Werner by allowing him to work off a stronger target man, albeit Lukaku is more than just a physical presence.
However, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi will have their own plans of how they could link up with Lukaku.
